In Santorini annually on an August Sunday the Municipality of Thira hosts our Island’s largest event, the Fireworks show on the volcanic island of Nea Kameni located centrally within the Santorini Caldera Bay in view of the entire island’s cliff side towns
From late in the afternoon several explosions are heard that warn the island’s guests to gather around the caldera view areas to take a seat and get ready for the show. Cruise ships that spent the day in the caldera waters leave the bay before sunset so that small boats and yachts can gather in the bay around the volcanic island to watch the fireworks from up close.
The fireworks show is always scheduled to begin at least half an hour after the sunset and when the sky is dark enough.
The first explosions are heard and the first fireworks a launched. Following for the next hour a massive display of fireworks follows with explosions that can be heard up to many miles away and bounce around the cliff faces surrounding the 85 square mile caldera bay area. Apart from the Fireworks an impressive lava simulation effect took place that resembled a live volcano.
The quiet area of Firostefani and Dana Villas are a perfect location to enjoy the breathtaking show as the quietness and low light of the surrounding area in combination with the close proximity and panoramic view of the volcanic island offered our guests at our restaurant and on their balconies an experience not to be forgotten.
Following are some photos shot from the Dana Villas Restaurant and a video (from neasantorini.gr) of the breathtaking event last night.
